Nearly six years ago in 2010, Dharmesh Shah of HubSpot wrote down ten reasons why Salesforce succeeded. The first two of those reasons stand out:
- "They focused on a large market (CRM) with an incumbent (Siebel) that had many unhappy customers."
- "They disrupted from below" by targeting small businesses "with simple pricing and low-risk implementations."
Both of those reasons have now become core tenants of the SaaS playbook. Now we're witnessing the next generation of SaaS companies that are trying to unseat companies like Salesforce.
Everyone working on or interested in SaaS should read this short post from Tomasz Tunguz. He hints at what the next ten years of SaaS will look like.
